Discover the private rooms of the First Lady of the Renaissance   Isabella d'Este, Marchioness of Mantua, is one of the most illustrious women in history, and her spirit is still living within her private rooms. Here fine frescoes, precious wooden inlays, gilded ceilings and a secret garden still tell us a lot about the woman, who - even during her lifetime - was described as "The First Lady" of the Renaissance.

The Ducal Palace of Mantua, the third largest palace in Europe, was the headquarters of the Gonzaga family's dominion of the city; learn about the "First Lady of the Renaissance". Discover Palazzo Te: the suburban villa created for the leisure time of the Dukes of Mantua.

Palazzo Te in Mantua
A privileged view of the masterpiece by Giulio Romano

This stunning villa was designed, built and decorated between 1525 and 1535 by Giulio Romano, Raphael's most talented pupil. Giulio was both architect and painter and he is the only Italian Renaissance artist mentioned by Shakespeare as "that rare Italian master". The Hall of the Horses, the Chamber of Cupid and Psyche and in particular the Room of the Giants are some of the clearest examples of the Italian Mannerist style.

The Ducal Palace of Mantua
A fascinating journey into the court of the Gonzaga family

The Ducal Palace in Mantua is commonly described as "a city within the city": a labyrinth of more than five hundred rooms, corridors and courtyards, which, together with the gardens, covers an area of over 35.000 meters squared.

Frescoes by Pisanello, Mantegna and Giulio Romano, paintings by Rubens and Domenico Fetti, and tapestries designed by Raphael, are all here to be found.
